Sunday, 31 October 2021 14:36

1. Background:

The year of 2021 is WFUCA’s 40th anniversary. To celebrate, Mr. Jay-Kun YOO, the president of Korean National Federation of UNESCO Clubs and Associations (KNFUCA) who was elected as WFUCA’s acting president, is hosting the Youth Forum. In tradition, participants from all over the country were to be invited to Korea, the hosting country, to gather up for the event. Yet, due to COVID-19, this upcoming Youth Forum is going to happen online by using metaverse platform called “Gathertown”.Metaverse is a term coined by writer Neal Stephenson in the novel “Snow Crash” which refers to an immersive digital environment where people interact as avatars.

Since the year of 1982, KNFUCA has been the focal point for peace in local communities of Korea. Following Korea’s admission to UNESCO, local UNESCO associations were launched to realize UNESCO’s ideals in the fields of Education, Science and Culture. Since 2015, KNFUCA, NFUAJ (National Federation of UNESCO Associations in Japan) and CNFUCA (Chinese National Federation of UNESCO Clubs and Associations) have implemented the Youth Cultural Festival for 4 years. In this program, the participants discussed what they can dofor the sustainable society and exchange ideas to deepen mutual understanding.

In this forum, participants will study SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), especially about climate chang eand culture. UNESCO defines climate change as a challenge of our time without question. While culture is are source for climate change mitigation and adaptation, UNESCO points out that culture is largely absent from our discussions on climate change today. Therefore, during this forum, participants will be able to investigate the culture being not only the victim of climate change, but also a powerful resource in global climate action.

2. Objectives:

This forum is designed for youth (age from 13 to 18) who want to learn more about SDGs, especially about the climate change and culture. The participants are requested to come up with action plan, "Culture Changing the World", to solve the issues regarding climate change from the learning and finding during the forum.
